What is copy editing

Copy editing involves identifying and fixing errors related to spelling and grammatical typos, tone and style inconsistencies, awkward syntax, and poor word choice. The goal of copy editing is to create cohesion, while maintaining the integrity of the author’s voice and meaning.

What a copy editor does

  • makes writing clear, concise, correct, comprehensive, and consistent
  • fixes mistakes with grammar, capitalization, punctuation, spelling, and formatting
  • ensures tables, graphs, and other illustrations contain the correct captions
  • checks that reference lists, works-cited pages, and bibliographies are properly formatted
